TECHNICAL NOTE (98503)

Summary: PCMCIA HDD and OS/2 2.1
Date: October 25, 1995
Product: As listed
Problem / Issue: Configuration
Solution: See Below
Additional Information: TSB-0305-C

IBM is now selling two sizes of PCMCIA HDDs type III; a 40 MB and a 105 MB. IBM ships DOS, Windows and OS/2 2.1 drivers with these HDDs.

The 40 MB HDD was successfully tested using a T4800CT under OS/2 2.1. The 105 MB HDD has not been tested but is expected that it should also work on type III PCMCIA slots on Toshiba computers.

IBM PCMCIA HDDs are available through IBM Direct by calling 1-800-465-7999.

Part# 70G8495 IBM 40 MB HDD PCMCIA

Part# 32G4199 IBM 105 MB HDD PCMCIA

To install and configure the drives under OS/2, please follow these instructions:

1) Have OS/2 2.1 installed on a Toshiba computer.

2)Download "OS2T45.ZIP" from IBM's BBS (919)517-0001. These are OS/2 PCMCIA Socket Services

Drivers for Toshiba T4500 but they work for all models of Toshiba computers with PCMCIA slots (except

the T3300SL).

3) Unarchive "OS2T45.ZIP"

4) COPY IBM2TOS1.SYS C:\OS2

5) COPY ICRMU01.SYS C:\OS2

6) COPY PCMCIA.SYS C:\OS2 (Must use this file even if you have installed the OS/2 service pack).

7) Modify the CONFIG.SYS. The last two lines must read:

DEVICE=C:\OS2\IBM2TOS1.SYS

DEVICE=C:\OS2\ICRMU01.SYS

8) Reboot the computer.

9) Install the IBM OS/2 PCMCIA HDD Drivers. Insert the diskette labelled "IBM PCMCIA ATA Device

Option Diskette". Type "OS2INST".

10) Reboot the computer.

11) The PCMCIA HDD will now work, type "Format D:" to format the drive. The "Drives" icon under OS/2

sees the drive as a floppy but one can see all the files.

12) Three lines have been added by the "OS2INST" installation program:
