Optimizing Windows 95 on Toshiba Computers

Windows 95 optimizes itself automatically during installation, so no fine tuning is normally required. Windows 95 automatically adjusts swap file and cache sizes for file, network, and CD-ROM drives.

If your computer appears to run slowly after installing Windows 95, the computer may need more RAM memory. Toshiba recommends at least 8MB of RAM for Windows 95, but a significant increase in speed will be noticed with 16MB or more of RAM. To determine the amount of RAM memory installed on your computer, go to the Desktop, single right click on My Computer, choose Properties, then select the Performance index tab. The amount of RAM memory installed will be listed at the top. If you plan to run several large programs simultaneously, it is advisable to have 16MB or more of RAM for best performance. Additional memory can be ordered from Toshiba Accessories at 1-800-959-4100.

Defragmenting the files on your hard disk can also increase the performance speed of Windows 95. To learn how to defragment files, single click the Start button, single click the Help icon, single click the Find index tab, and then type in the word DEFRAGMENT to view the help topics, or review the section on hard disk defragmenting in the Windows 95 manual.

For additional information on optimizing the performance of Windows 95, single click the Start button, single click the Help icon, single click the Find index tab, and then type in the word PERFORMANCE or TROUBLESHOOTING to view the help topics.
