PCMCIA Issues and Windows 95

Windows 95 supports many PCMCIA devices such as modems, network adapters, SCSI cards, sound cards, ATA hard drives and more. To recognize and configure PCMCIA devices, use the Windows 95 PCMCIA Wizard rather than any card managers such as Toshiba Card Manager 1.0 or 3.0.

To run the PCMCIA Wizard, single click the Start button. Select Settings and then Control Panel. Then double click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon. If you have already installed Windows 95 PCMCIA support you will see a window titled PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties. If you have not installed Windows 95 PCMCIA support you will be taken through the PCMCIA Wizard setup.

As mentioned earlier, do not install any device drivers received with a PCMCIA device as many devices are already supported by Windows 95. However, if the device you purchased comes with its own Windows 95 drivers, then follow the manufacturers instructions.

The Noteworthy Bus Toaster SCSI-II adapter requires a special configuration. After inserting the card into a PCMCIA slot, Windows 95 will display a New Hardware Found dialog box. Select the option titled, Select from a list of alternate drivers, then single click OK. When prompted for Hardware Type, choose SCSI controllers. You will then be presented with Manufacturer and Models pick lists. Choose New Media under the Manufacturers listing. Choose Bus Toaster - PCMCIA SCSI Host Adapter under the Models listing. When this is finished and Windows 95 is restarted, the Noteworthy Bus Toaster SCSI-II adapter will be configured to support SCSI devices.

The Noteworthy Token Ring PCMCIA and Ethernet PCMCIA cards will automatically be recognized and configured by Windows 95. You need only modify your network-specific options found in Control Panel under the Network icon.

Noteworthy PCMCIA ATA hard drives and Noteworthy PCMCIA fax/modems are automatically recognized and configured by Windows 95. In most cases, the fax/modems are also automatically configured to use serial port COM2.

All devices and their connections can be verified in System Properties. To open System Properties, right single click on the My Computer icon and then choose Properties. Single click the tab labeled Device Manager and the Device Manager will display a complete listing of each device currently on your system.
